Highlights:

Cheraw State Park is located just outside the historic town of Cheraw and is one of the oldest state parks in South Carolina, originally developed during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The park is known for its longleaf pine forests, rolling sandhills, scenic lakes, and abundant wildlife, offering visitors a landscape that differs significantly from the mountains and coastal regions of the state. Among its newer recreational opportunities is the Turkey Oak Trail, a four-mile roundtrip loop that showcases much of the park’s natural beauty. The hike begins at the trailhead parking area and is commonly completed in a counter-clockwise direction. Starting on the red-blazed Cheraw Nature Trail, hikers head south through a forest dominated by longleaf pines, turkey oaks, and other native vegetation characteristic of the Sandhills region. During the first half mile, the trail climbs gently before beginning a gradual 100-foot descent toward the Turkey Oak Trail, providing changing views of the surrounding woodland. The well-maintained paths and relatively mild terrain make this route suitable for hikers of most skill levels while offering an excellent opportunity to experience one of South Carolina’s unique ecosystems.

Along the route, hikers have the option of taking a short spur trail to the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker Management Area, a worthwhile side trip that highlights ongoing conservation efforts for one of the Southeast’s most endangered bird species. Continuing on the main route, the red-blazed trail eventually intersects the white-blazed Turkey Oak Trail, which forms a scenic two-mile loop through the heart of the park. The trail descends toward picturesque Eureka Lake before curving north and eventually reconnecting with the Cheraw Nature Trail. Near the lakeshore, a bench marks another short spur trail leading directly to the water’s edge, where visitors can enjoy views across the lake and provide a refreshing break for both hikers and their canine companions. Ducks, turtles, wading birds, and other wildlife are frequently seen in and around the shallow waters, adding to the area’s appeal for nature lovers and photographers. Dog owners should keep pets on a close leash near the shoreline, as the resident waterfowl often attract the attention of curious dogs, particularly retrievers and other breeds with a natural interest in birds. The combination of easy hiking, diverse habitats, wildlife viewing opportunities, and scenic lake vistas makes the Turkey Oak Trail one of the most enjoyable walks within Cheraw State Park.
