HIGHLIGHTS: The final section
of the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts climbs the highest point in the state,
Mount Greylock. The summit is at 3,500 feet and it has outstanding views into
New York, Vermont and Canada. Mount Greylock was the first site in the nation to
have a pay observation tower, and the Bascom Lodge is located on site with
bunkrooms, showers, meals, and a snack bar. The Mount Greylock State
Reservation, which surrounds the summit, totals 11,000 acres and it has an
extensive trail system in addition to the A.T.
The town of North Adams and Williamstown are located just north of Mount
Greylock, these villages are the last opportunity for the northbound hiker to
re-supply in the State of Massachusetts.
