The Rich Mountain Wilderness was designated by Congress in 1986 and today protects more than 10,000 acres of rugged mountain terrain within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Named for Rich Mountain, which rises to 4,050 feet, the wilderness is characterized by steep ridges, narrow coves, dense hardwood forests, and clear mountain streams that provide important habitat for a variety of wildlife. Remnants of early white settlements can still be found just north of the summit, including old home sites, stone foundations, and other traces of mountain life dating to around 1910. These settlements followed an even longer history of Native American use of the area, as Cherokee camps and travel corridors once occupied many of the high ridgelines. Along the western edge of the wilderness, the scenic Cartecay River cuts through the mountains, and one of the streams draining Rich Mountain became famous for producing the largest gold nugget ever discovered in Georgia during the state’s nineteenth-century gold rush.
The Stanley Gap Trail offers a challenging but rewarding journey through the heart of the Rich Mountain Wilderness. Running between Deep Gap and Stanley Gap, the trail can be hiked in either direction, though both approaches require a steady climb of more than 1,000 feet to reach the summit of Rocky Mountain (3,244 feet). The route travels through mature hardwood forests and along remote ridgelines that showcase the wild character of this protected landscape. Near the summit, hikers are rewarded with seasonal views that extend across the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly during the winter when leaves no longer obscure the scenery. South of Rocky Mountain, the trail shares a short section with the renowned Benton MacKaye Trail, a long-distance footpath that connects many of the region’s most scenic backcountry areas. The combination of strenuous climbing, mountain views, wilderness solitude, and historical significance makes the Stanley Gap Trail one of the premier hikes in North Georgia.
