HIGHLIGHTS:  The Green Mountain Club built the Long Trial between 1910 and 1930 and it is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States.  The Long Trail was the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail and it shares a 100 mile section in Southern and Central Vermont with the A.T.  There are over 70 primitive huts along the route which follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border near East Richford, Vermont.  The trail is rugged, rocky, and muddy in parts, and it crosses some of Vermont's highest peaks including Stratton Mt (3963 feet), Killington Peak (4241 feet), Mt. Abraham (4,006 feet) and Mt. Mansfield (4,393 feet).  Around 150 hikers complete the entire route each year according to the Long Trail guidebook, but don't be fooled by the relatively low elevations.  The Long Trail is challenging and it has many ascents and descents as it heads north to Canada.
